What is Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)?

Q: Our child may have been diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder. What does that mean and how does it relate to ABA therapy?

A:
As Clinical Coordinator at Achieving Stars Therapy I work closely with families from the moment of diagnosis through intervention and progress reviews.

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental condition characterised by two core areas: difficulties in social communication and interaction, and the presence of restricted or repetitive patterns of behaviour or interests.

What this means in practice: Children may show difficulty initiating or maintaining conversations, sharing interests, or interpreting non-verbal cues.

They may engage in repetitive behaviours, insist on sameness, have intense interests or sensory sensitivities Because ASD is a spectrum there is wide variation in how it presents.

At Achieving Stars Therapy we emphasise a strengths-based approach: we identify your child’s unique profile, and we tailor our ABA programs accordingly. We help children build communication, social and daily living skills while supporting families in navigating this journey.
